The essence of romance, this couple’s story is what inspires poems. They were engaged in the Nashville Library by a series of clues left in books (and especially the Bride's favorite, Pride & Prejudice) then agree to get married in a greenhouse, you know it's going to be magical.

the Details

Kaitlynn, Joshua, and Kaitlynn's family hired me to design and plan their wedding. When I met them, after no time at all, I knew this was going to be a fun event to plan. While they loved the setting of the Greenhouse at Long Hollow Gardens, and who wouldn't, they weren't willing to be on the "barn" bandwagon and design anything rustic or cliche with the typical fall colors and style. A very traditional couple, they were looking for an elegant and authentic wedding. 



We immediately started meeting with Kaitlynn and her family to go over the design aesthetic of the event. From my studio, we explored color palettes, wedding attire choices, and the overall feel of the evening. Getting to know Kaitlynn, her minimal style and the families desire to keep things formal, yet comfortable and inviting never presented. When our clients know what truly want,  it makes our job delightful and inspiring. Kaitlynn was always very specific in her color choices. To make sure we were all on the same page, we used our fabric samples, Pantone swatch books, and literally sat down with plates, flower petals, swatches, wood swatches and other materials to create a "living mood board" to work from. 



For color selections, we went with a soft color palette of blush tones, gray, a soft and muted seafoam green/blue (inspired by a velvet fabric swatch from RH), and pops of dark reds. 



For the invitations, we hired calligrapher Andi Allison to hand-letter a series of designs including the couples full name, initials, and some floral illustrations that would be carried out throughout the website, wedding paper goods, signage and other printed materials for the wedding. Andi also created a hand-drawn map of the grounds at Long Hollow Gardens since the entire wedding would be taking place in different parts of the very expansive venue. I watercolored the art and we included a map in the invitation for guests. 



We wanted to incorporate Kaitlynn's love of literature into the wedding design as much as possible, but only where it seemed to make sense. We used quotes from her favorite books on signage throughout the venue.  We also used a very valuable collection of leather-bound books that her family owned to decorate the planting stands in the Greenhouse. The stands look like old bookshelves so we placed the books, candles, and old family photographs on the shelves along with greenhouse plants and some smaller arrangements. We had initially talked about using the books on the tables, however, it seemed unnatural and awkward so we opted for simple arrangements and candles to make the tables clean and uncluttered. 




We went with the venues rentals of round tables and folding chairs to stay within the couple's budget. The tables were covered with an elegant and modern gray poly tablecloth. We did provide some specialty rentals from my company for the cocktail hour and reception. A casual seating area, which included a linen chesterfield sofa and two leather armchairs, provided a wonderful and inviting touch to the Farmhouse for cocktail hour. The string trio Viva La Strings provided music there during cocktail hour, as well as the main ceremony music. 



We provided "comprehensive" planning services for Kaitlynn and her family. Meaning that we were the go-between for her and every vendor. We helped her make every decision along the way. Every detail, from her dress to the music, to the send-off and everything in between was directed by Deanna Burks Design.  We started the process in December of 2015 for her fall 2016 wedding. We have planned during shorter timeframes and longer and still the outcome is the same because we follow a series of steps in a timeline to ensure that no details slip through the cracks. 

Most people don't really understand what all goes into an event, but there's nothing fun about standing there on your wedding day, with sweat pouring off of you as you try to figure out who was supposed to bring the ice. So we encourage our clients to let us handle this and we use our system of checks and balances to make sure all the details are handled. Done! A stress-free day. 



For Kaitlynn, we pulled together a list of vendors, based on her style and budget. Style can vary widely with vendors and we always want to make sure we match like-minded folks. For example, I always noticed Kaitlynn's clean style when it came to her makeup so I wanted to make sure we chose a makeup artist that would create a look for Kaitlynn that worked. We chose Amanda Gros for this reason. Her style and philosophy resonated with Kaitlynn and this helped her be confident our choice. The last thing I want for a client is to be worrying about the outcome. 

Part of our work with vendors is to help our clients create agreements between both parties that work for the client. The right services that meet their needs and stay within their budget. We explore what is most important and suggest services based on those needs. 

If flowers aren't that important to you, we suggest putting that money into something that is more meaningful.



We use our own software to manage our client's project from start to finish. They have their own login and they are connected to each vendor. From their dashboard, they are able to send me messages, their vendors, upload documents, and more. We do our work there as well, managing guest lists, RSVPs, itineraries, timelines, floor plans, and layouts. We do our best to keep every vendor in the loop right along with the client. The baker knows exactly what time to arrive. Every vendor sees our work progress and answers to questions are often available before they are even asked. It's a smooth process.
